The company regularly updates its ArcaOS offering to fix bugs and improve compatibility with modern machines.

A quarter of a century after IBM released the last official version of OS/2, someone is still keeping the platform alive under the ArcaOS name. Arca Noae is now the only company licensing OS/2 technology from IBM, after Serenity Systems' eComStation project disappeared around 14 years ago.

Arca Noae recently announced a brand-new release of ArcaOS, a 32-bit operating system based on OS/2 Warp 4.52. First and foremost, ArcaOS 5.1.2 provides better compatibility with the latest UEFI-based x86 systems. The operating system should now be easier to install on modern computers, even when they use the GUID Partition Table standard instead of traditional MBR-style partitioning.

At the same time, Arca Noae said that ArcaOS 5.1.2 can still boot, install, and run on older BIOS-based systems, delivering the same improvements in stability and performance. The new release also includes updates to the desktop experience, many system drivers, localizations, the pre-boot environment, and more. A new ArcaOS license costs $139, and Arca Noae also offers discount programs for existing customers whose support plans have expired.

<iframe height="390" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Utse8P_L8k0?rel=0&showinfo=0&modestbranding=1&vq=hd720&autohide=1" width="560" style="border-width:0px;margin:0px;padding:0px;font-size:1em;width:650px;height:365.625px;" alt="Utse8P_L8k0?rel=0&showinfo=0&modestbranding=1&vq=hd720&autohide=1" / frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Speaking about customers, Arca Noae describes ArcaOS as a good operating system for professionals still clinging to the OS/2 platform. The commercial system does not spy on users or report online activity, while still providing enough flexibility to install plenty of applications. ArcaOS can even run on Pentium Pro systems with as little as 512MB of RAM, although 2GB is recommended for the best experience.

ArcaOS fits comfortably in systems with less than 4GB of RAM, although compatibility with modern machines is not guaranteed. The official wiki-style documentation may provide useful guidance for people interested in trying the platform on their own hardware. In a worst-case scenario, the OS can also run in modern hypervisor-based virtual machines.

// RELATED STORIES

IBM says it will triple entry-level hiring for roles "we're being told AI can do"

DR-DOS is coming back from the dead, rebuilt from scratch in pure assembly

ArcaOS can allegedly run applications from multiple computing platforms, starting with native support for 16-bit software designed for MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. The Wine-based Odin API can also run a subset of Win32 applications. The OS is currently available in English, German, Spanish, and Russian, and Arca Noae says additional localizations are planned for future releases.

ArcaOS may sound like a curious experiment in the fight against planned obsolescence, but its roots have real historical significance. The OS/2 project began as a partnership between IBM and Microsoft to replace MS-DOS with a "real" GUI-based 32-bit operating system. The effort turned out to be a dud after Microsoft began selling millions of copies of Windows 3.0.

Regardless, the developers behind both projects develop OS/2 under license from IBM, but it’s unclear just how much they can change or alter, and what the terms of the agreement are.

Anyway, ArcaOS 5.1.2 has just been released, and it seems to be a rather minor release. It further refines ArcaOS’ support for UEFI and GPT-based disks, the tentpole feature of ArcaOS 5.1 which allows the operating system to be installed on a much more modern systems without having to fiddle with BIOS compatibility modes. Looking at the list of changes, there’s the usual list of updated components from both Arca Noae and the wider OS/2 community. You’ll find the latest versions of of the Panorama graphics drivers, ACPI, USB, and NVMe drivers, improved localisation, newer versions of the VNC server and viewer, and much more.

If you have an active Support & Maintenance subscription for ArcaOS 5.1, this update is free, and it’s also available at discounted prices as upgrades for earlier versions. A brand new copy of ArcaOS 5.1.x will set you back $139, which isn’t cheap, but considering this price is probably a consequence of what must be some onerous licensing terms and other agreements with IBM, I doubt there’s much Arca Noae can do about it.

These updates are already included in ArcaOS 5.1.2, but if you are not updating to ArcaOS 5.1.2 you can still take advantage of some of the new driver updates. They are now available as part of the Support & Maintenance subscription for your ArcaOS product, and in the Arca Noae OS/2 & eCS Drivers and Software Subscription, Please log into your account and visit your Download & renewal center to access your software. This enables ArcaOS 5.1.2 to install on a wide array of modern hardware. As with all ArcaOS releases, ArcaOS 5.1.2 still boots, installs, and runs well on traditional BIOS-based systems, offering enhanced stability and performance for either environment.

This release is free of charge to those with active ArcaOS 5.1 Support & Maintenance subscriptions, and there is no charge for requesting additional language ISOs (though your total number of ArcaOS 5.1 installations may not exceed the number of ArcaOS 5.1 licenses you have).

ArcaOS 5.1.2 can be used for new installs or to upgrade any prior English version of ArcaOS 5. If installing from USB stick, the USB install stick may be created using any major operating system at hand (Windows, Linux, MacOS, and of course, OS/2, eComStation, and ArcaOS). Once built, the USB stick can be inserted into any USB port in the target system to boot into the ArcaOS installer/updater in either UEFI or traditional BIOS mode (alternatively, the DVD image may be burned to physical media and also booted to either UEFI or traditional BIOS systems). See the wiki for specific notes and limitations of the USB stick creation utility on Windows.

For a complete list of updates in this release, see the ArcaOS wiki. Be sure to review the README.TXT, as well, as this contains critical information to ensure that you get up and running fast, and includes tips for getting things adjusted right away.

This upgrade is available at a steep discount with your valid ArcaOS 5.0 Support & Maintenance subscription (and your remaining subscription time will be added to the included support term). To download your fresh ISO, simply visit your customer portal page and select the Download Center link on the navigation panel to the left. From there, click the “Upgrade to 5.1” button, and proceed to checkout.

If your ArcaOS 5.0 Support & Maintenance subscription has already expired, you may still upgrade at less than the cost of a new ArcaOS 5.1 license. Follow the procedure above to order your upgrade, and the discount will be reflected in your cart.

New ArcaOS 5.1.2 license purchases are initially built as English. To request a different language, simply visit your Download Center, select the Build ISO Again button, and choose your language.

Need more convincing? How about a commercial operating system which doesn’t spy on you, does not report your online activity to anyone, and gives you complete freedom to choose the applications you want to use, however you want to use them? How about an operating system which isn’t tied to any specific hardware manufacturer, allowing you to choose the platform which is right for you, and fits perfectly well in systems with less than 4GB of memory or even virtual machines?

Arca Noae is committed to continuing the development, support, maintenance, and refinement of the OS/2 platform. The next release of ArcaOS is indeed already in the works. The future continues to look bright for Arca Noae and ArcaOS!

This entry last updated: March 8th, 2026 by Lewis Rosenthal

This entry was posted in Arca Noae, ArcaOS, New software releases, News and tagged arcaos, blue lion, discount, entitlement, gpt, release, subscription, uefi, upgrade on March 8, 2026 by Lewis Rosenthal.
