Congratulations to Wayne Swanson of PillarSoft, recently appointed as
Vice President of VOICE.

"My interest in joining Voice was, and is, to get involved in the
promotion and support of the OS/2 operating system. As OS/2 users, we
need to be joined in a common cause to make our voices heard. I have
been very impressed with the terrific people that I have met in our
virtual meetings and hope to be able to contribute in my own small
way." Wayne said following the appointment. He went on to say, "I
think it is important that we as OS/2 users get involved in promotion
and support of OS/2 for the home/SOHO user and hope that many of you
will seriously consider taking that step with us. We can only be
stronger with your support."

Similarly, Toshiba posted a Windows 98 upgrade
warning on its Web site stating that users of its recent
ACPI-equipped portable models should wait until
Toshiba makes available a new BIOS with improved
  ACPI compatibility.

"It will be extremely difficult or impossible to retrofit

deleting your registry and reinstalling Windows 98."

The last 12 months have been a great success for Uwe Schlenther's
OS/2 programs. The most successful of his utilities, the sticky note
program WarpNote, is today considered a "Must Have" in the OS/2
community. With the just released version 1.41, WarpNote gains even
more usability with features that were suggested by the users.

WarpNote v1.41 can be downloaded from BMT Micro:

  http://www.bmtmicro.com/catalog/warpnote.html

Also, WarpNote is part of Uwe Schlenther's "Happy Birthday Special".
Uwe Schlenther wants to say "Thank You!" for the support and
encouragement he has received from the users of his software. Between
June 22nd to July 22nd, all you have to do is write a "Happy
Birthday" note in your own language to U.Schlenther@gmx.net and send
your order to BMT Micro at orders@bmtmicro.com (you must put the
words "Happy Birthday Special" in the subject line of your order or
in the comments field of the order form if you order from the BMT
Micro WWW site). The price for the programs is US$ 12 for each
registration of either WarpNote, PM Checksum or BioGraph. For more
information on the programs, visit Uwe Schlenther's WWW pages:

With little more than 500 days left before the year 2000,
Microsoft is still sending out confusing messages about its
server and desktop applications that may mask the true
extent of the year-2000 problem facing customers.

Officially, Microsoft executives insist that the company's
applications are now year-2000 compliant. But many of
those assertions gloss over a number of implementation
issues that will create havoc for IT managers.

"[Microsoft] Office has been architected for year-2000
compliance for some time. Office 4 is year-2000 compliant
with the exception of Access. Office 95 and Office 97 are
year-2000 compliant," said Matthew Price, group product
manager of the Office developer group at Microsoft.

However, each program within each Office version is
"compliant" in its own way, and in some cases each
revision of each package has a different formula for
  recognizing two-digit dates.

"For example, if you type in 'Feb. 29' in a field in Microsoft
Excel, how that's interpreted depends on the pivot date in
the version of Excel you're using," said Robert Lefkowitz, a
consultant at Next Era, in New York. "In the current
version you'd get February 2029. In the previous version,
you'd get February 1929. If you were using this data in the
year 2000, you'd get Feb. 29, 2000, because Excel knows
  it's a leap year."

  Other issues are also unresolved.

A program written in Access, Excel, or Lotus that uses a
two-digit date field may -- depending on the version -- get
  stored as 1900.

"Ship dates will be stored incorrectly or, if you query the
sales for the last month, the program may not pull in all the
records. Or, if you're calculating bond maturity dates, as
soon as you go to 2030 it will think it's 1930," said Steve
Haskell, a senior consultant and year-2000 specialist at
  Metamore Technologies, in Chicago.

Problems also reside within server applications, such as
Microsoft's SQL Server database which won't recognize
the year 2000 as a leap year.

"Our clients are hospitals and we use Access for the front
end, VB [Visual Basic] as the middle tier, and SQL Server
on the back end. We [may] have some real problems,"
said Randy Hartwig, a senior developer at Stockamp &
  Associates, in Lake Oswego, Ore.

Hartwig cites potential problems such as patients checking
out of the hospital before they are born, bills being overdue
before they are sent out and children born in the year 2000
may have a birth record that will show they were born in
  1900.

But according to Microsoft, there is no problem, despite
the fact that Microsoft says a program must recognize the
year 2000 as a leap year to be compliant.

"The way we store date formats for the product as a whole
does so in complete compliance with year 2000," said
Doug Leland, lead product manager for SQL Server at
  Microsoft.

Leland adds this caveat: "What we did learn is there is a
number of peripheral areas in the products, specifically with
our task scheduler [in SQL 6.5] as well as with the
expiration date option on backup that has some issues with
recognizing 2000 as a leap year."

As some of you may recall, there were rumors that concerning ELSA's
OS/2 support. Here is what ELSA had to say:

          Dear OS/2 user,

A considerable amount of speculation has been taking place
in the news groups recently with regard to the future of
OS/2 driver support for ELSA graphics boards. We have
been reading your comments and queries attentively and
hope that this statement will cover the majority of your
          questions.

Last year, ELSA invested around DM 2 million in the
continued development of OS/2 drivers. The ELSA
WINNER 2000/Office was provided with functions such
          as:

               support for dual monitors
               video capture drivers
low-cost videoconferencing with an ELSA plug-in
               for CUSeeMe/2

These successes in our development efforts have frequently
been overlooked during the current discussion of future 3D
          interfaces for OS/2.

We would like to state the following with regard to OS/2
          support for ELSA graphics boards:

          1. ELSA will continue to supply and maintain driver updates
for all graphics products which are currently supplied with
OS/2 drivers. These efforts will involve the optimization of
the drivers and not the inclusion of the most recent
          developments such as 3D interfaces.

          2. ELSA will continue to provide free support for OS/2
          users in its usual scope.

          3. ELSA will not provide hardware support for OpenGL
          under OS/2.

The reason: According to the information available to us, no
genuine applications with 3D acceleration are currently
available to end customers. The main field of application for
OpenGL is clearly in the 3D workstation sector.
Unfortunately, OS/2 was not able to establish itself in this
field. It is also an established fact that IBM is no longer
actively marketing the OS/2 operating system to end
          customers.

Our staff includes many dedicated OS/2 users. We can thus
understand your arguments and the emotions being
          expressed in the news groups.

However, ELSA's driver support cannot influence the
support and continued development of an operating system.
The signals to this effect came from IBM some time ago.

I would be pleased to answer any specific questions that
you may have at the e-mail address os2dev@elsa.de.

          Sincerely,
          Volker Maxisch

According to the Free Online Dictionary of Computing, commonly
referred to as FOLDOC, an operating system is "the low-level
software which schedules tasks, allocates storage, handles the
interface to peripheral hardware and presents a default interface to
the user when no application program is running." In other words, it's
the development home base. While Microsoft's offerings appear
regularly in news headlines and hackers are typically UNIX fans,
there are several other lesser-known systems which you may prefer
as a starting point when you develop software. Here are your
favorite flavors...

In a neck and neck race, OS/2 and Linux grabbed the number one
and two spots respectively. Their scores tallied almost double that of
the next entry on the list, BeOS, while bigger names such as
Macintosh and Solaris were forced to be content with the fifth and
sixth slots. In terms of another big name, there were four Microsoft
offerings to choose from, though they were scattered throughout the
results, placing fourth, seventh, eleventh and fifteenth. Various flavors
of Unix were left to bring up the rear.

From the comments we received, it is obvious that readers are most
concerned with their operating system's stability. Though others
chimed in with sweeping remarks such as, "The world needs a real
and open operating system: Linux," "OS/2 is Macintosh on steroids,"
and of course the always-popular "(Fill in the blank) rules!"

The top three winners are:

     OS/2
     Linux
     BeOS

The remaining entries ranked as follows (from highest to lowest):

     Windows NT
     Macintosh
     Solaris
     Windows 95
     DOS
     *BSD
     Rhapsody
     Windows 98
     AIX
     HP-UX
     Digital Unix
     Windows 3.1
     SCO Unix
     VMS
     Multics
     Magic Cap

The popular "write your own" category included such choices as:

     Amiga
     Windows CE
     Newton
     Sun OS 4
     OS/400
     NextStep
     QNX

Sun Microsystems has found that Microsoft has removed some old
incompatibilities from its Java products but introduced some new ones,
  Sun officials said Thursday.

In tests carried out on Microsoft's Software Developer Kit J 3.0 (SDKJ)
and Microsoft Visual J ++ 6.0 for Java development tools, Microsoft
had removed some mislabeled class libraries but included new
  keywords.

"This means that if a developer moves the program to a non-Microsoft
compiler, the program will not run," said Lisa Poulson, a representative
  for Sun Microsystems.

The move represents a standoff between the two companies, which are
due back in court for a hearing on September 4. (See "Sun, Microsoft
agree to postpone Win 98-Java hearing.")

Microsoft officials say that nothing has changed.

"Sun, basically, is asking the court to rewrite the existing licensing
agreement between the two companies," said Microsoft spokesman Jim
Cullinan. "We have an irrevocable right to modify, adapt, and create
derivative works of the technology licensed by Sun."

The setup routine for Microsoft's new Windows 98
operating system deliberately disables files used by
competitors' software and installs different versions
of those files for the use of Windows 98.

Windows 98 includes a new utility, the Version
Conflict Manager, or VCM, to keep track of the
disabled files and provide a way for users to switch
the files back. But the Win98 setup routine does not
provide any notice to users that the files are being
changed or that the Version Conflict Manager is
available if a competitors' software no longer
       operates properly.

The changed files are DLLs -- small support
programs that are shared by several applications --
as well as other shared files. If the Windows 98
setup routine detects that a competitors' program
has installed a newer shared file than the version that
comes with Windows 98, the setup routine moves
the file to a new location, thereby disabling it.
Win98 then installs an older version of the same file
into the proper location. The application that
depended on the newer version of that file may no
longer work properly, or it may no longer work at
       all.

Microsoft product manager Shawn Sanford stated
in an e-mail exchange, "We wanted to be assured of
a known, working baseline operating system when
we were done with installation." This practice,
however, places competitors who rely on the newer
files at a severe disadvantage. Competitors'
applications may no longer work, but users would
have received no notice of the change.

In one test machine, the Windows 98 setup routine
       disabled three shared files:

            Twain.dll 1.6.0.3 (supports numerous
            scanners and other devices)

            Msconv97.dll 1997.4.2

            W95inf32.dll 4.71.17

The files were replaced with these older versions:

            Twain.dll 1.6.0.1

            Msconv97.dll 1997.3.12

            W95inf32.dll 4.71.16

The Twain file, of course, is a popular driver that
supports numerous scanners and other devices.
Files of this type usually originate with Microsoft
and are distributed by the Redmond, Wash.
software giant to competitors for use with its
products. But Windows 98 appears to rely upon
earlier versions and swaps the files, whether or not
this has a negative effect on other installed
       applications.

The Version Conflict Manager lets the user select a
file and trade the older version for the newer
version. But a Win98 user typically has no
knowledge of what applications use which shared
files or which version of each file would be "better."
Moreover, the utility is unlikely to be found routinely
by users, because it is buried deep within Win98's
menu structure: Click Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information, Tools, Version
Conflict Manager -- and then you will find it.

Ironically, the origin of the Version Conflict
Manager appears to have been a series of four
columns written I wrote from Sept. 2 to Sept. 23,
1996. The columns complained that Windows 95
allowed applications to install older versions of
shared files over newer ones, causing programs to
crash. I urged Microsoft to have Windows catch
such conflicts and prevent them, while allowing the
user to switch between shared files, if necessary,
       later.

Rather than make the Version Conflict Manager
available to all applications, however, "the VCM
mechanism is only turned on during Windows 98
install," according to Sanford. After Win98's setup
is over, the Version Conflict Manager ceases
monitoring the system. If the installation of a
       third-party application subsequently causes a
problem, the Version Conflict Manager will have no
       information about the situation.

Any user who installs Windows 98 should check the
Version Conflict Manager immediately after the
setup routine is complete to see if any shared files
were changed. The Version Conflict Manager
should show the names and version numbers of any
files the Win98 setup routine modified. If this is the
case, I'll describe in my column next week how you
can tell what applications rely on those files and
whether you should switch to the newer versions.

The Ultimate OS/2 Gaming Page now has its own domain hosted
by the OS/2 Supersite. For all webmasters who link to the
page (and I know there are quite a few), please update your
links to:

  http://www.os2games.com/

Now that I've settled into the real world after college,
I've had some time to decide what I really wanted to do
with this page and what I decided was that I wanted to
improve and expand it. I've gotten some great help from
several people who answered my call for help here a few
weeks ago and the new domain is online thanks to Dr. Dirk
Terrell of the OS/2 Supersite.

The site is undergoing some renovations but I think I've
taken care of most of the broken links. If you find a
problem, have a suggestion, or would like to advertize your
product on the page, please feel free to email me at
colin@os2games.com.

ABOUT WARPSTOCK '98

In 1997, the first annual Warpstock drew OS/2 users from every corner
of globe to southern California to see some of the world's best
software and hardware offerings running on the world's best and most
stable operating system. With its greater visibility, the second time
around, Warpstock '98 is expected to outshine even last year's
amazing success.

The OS/2 Alternative volunteer-maintained list of more than 990
current, native OS/2 applications has been updated at of July 15,
1998.

This page can be found at:

  http://www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/os2apps.shtml

Enhancements include a reorganization of some of the software
categories, still more new OS/2 applications listed, linked, and
categorized in rough comparison to what you or a friend/associate may
already be using for Windows, and some (hopefully) more attractive
colors.

New features include a navigation menu for easier browsing of the
extensive list of categories. Now you can find the software you need
much more easily! There is also a new sub-page listing my intentions
for the future of The OS/2 Alternative. Be sure to check it out and
post other suggestions via the handy form provided there.

I am very excited about coming so close to the 1,000 applications
mark. I expect to reach it within two weeks and wish I could throw a
massive celebration party with all the OS/2 users, developers, and
enthusiasts who have made this list possible since early 1997.

Three New JavaBeans suites from alphaWorks are now available at the
     alphaBeans Repository.

ObjectComboBox - Looking for a dropdown list which is editable and
searchable?? Then, ObjectComboBox is the right thing for you. Not only
strings, you can store any type of object in the list. The ObjectComboBox
is a text field with an attached drop-down list box. It can add not only
string items but also object items of any kind into the list directly. It may
          be editable and/or searchable.
Spinner - Do you want to incorporate a spin facility for numbers, dates
and time in your application? The Spinner Suite of Beans is a component
with two small direction buttons that lets the user modify the value in an
input field or possibly enter a new legal value directly in the input field.
Anxious Tick Tape - Want to enhance the look of your Web sites?
How about adding some images and attractive banners? The TickTape
bean allows a web site to display images (JPEG/GIF) for presenting
information or using as an advertising banner.

The DataBook(tm) for OS/2 Warp is an on-line book
that requires only your favorite Web browser to access.
It contains technical data ranging from the architecture of
Warp and how it works, to error code listings with
detailed explanations of their causes and how to correct
them. It includes information about all versions of Warp
including Warp 3, Warp 4, and Warp Server and covers
installation and use of all Warp versions as well as
troubleshooting, problem solving techniques, power users
tips, recovery techniques, and recommendations for OS/2
tools and software based upon Mr. Both's many years of
     experience with OS/2.

Because it is available only electronically via the Internet,
it is always up to date. Pay only a one-time access charge
and have unlimited access to the latest OS/2 Warp
information. No further charges will ever be required.

IBM Disputes Microsoft's PR Server Capacity Claims!...
IBM is claiming publicly that Microsoft is lying about their
published claims of having the biggest capacity server to contain
the world's largest and most detailed Atlas on a Microsoft SQL
Server database, version 7.0 Enterprise Edition, holding 31.05 of
compressed Terrabytes of data. IBM has vehemently disputed the
claims providing proof that its own online 15 Terrabytes database of
U.S. patents dwarfs MS's poor performing server. Microsoft's
performance claims are completely out of line with reality of the
server crashes - typical of Microsoft's PR lies. "You don't get to
Carnegie Hall because you got a saxophone and you can blow a note,"
says Steve Mills, general manager of IBM Software Solutions
division.

Compaq, whose hardware has failed to meet the needs of the server's
64-bit AlphaServer 8400 system, is partners with Microsoft in this
-thus far- failed venture. Microsoft's only comment has been to
barely apologize for the delays saying, "We are humbled that we
didn't anticipate the amount of interest..."

Computer industry executives who have not previously criticized
Microsoft openly went on record in a Senate Judiciary Committee
hearing Thursday saying that the software giant's business practices
are anti-competitive, affecting many segments of the industry.

Microsoft is taking anti-competitive tactics it has used successfully in
the market for Internet browsers and is applying them to other
aspects of the software industry, the executives said.

The officials testified at the behest of Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah,
who said he has received numerous complaints from companies
about Microsoft business practices. Most companies, however, are
afraid to come before the committee and testify, Hatch said.

The industry officials testifying included Jeffrey Papows, president
and CEO of IBM subsidiary Lotus Development; Mitchell
Kertzman, chairman and CEO of Sybase; Robert Glaser, chairman
and CEO of Real Networks; Michael Jeffress, vice president of
Electronic TV Host; as well as longtime Microsoft critic Larry
Ellison, CEO and chairman of database maker Oracle.

"I have not been a longtime opponent or competitor of Microsoft,"
Kertzman said in his testimony Thursday. "However, I am now
firmly convinced that the unchecked use of Microsoft's monopoly
position poses the most serious threat to the vitality of the software
  industry."

Kertzman gave an example of what he called "intimidation" by
Microsoft's use of its monopoly position in the software market. A
little over a year ago, Sybase introduced a new product, Jaguar
CTS, a software platform for deploying and developing
transaction-intensive business applications on the Internet.

Approximately one week after publishing information on the
product, Kertzman said, he was called by a Microsoft executive
who asked him whether he understood the product would compete
with a similar product from Microsoft, Transaction Server. The
executive, David Vaskevitch, said Microsoft "did not think that was
  a good idea," Kertzman said.

"The overall tone of the call left me with a singular impression that
we had received a threat -- that competition in the market with
Microsoft is not acceptable behavior," Kertzman said.

Within weeks of that conversation, Microsoft announced that it was
bundling Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) with its Windows NT
  operating system, Kertzman said.

"By bundling, MS is able to engage in predatory pricing," Kertzman
said, noting that "a month after our announcement, Microsoft
announced that MTS would be bundled, with a price below $100."

The original price of the Microsoft software was $2,000, Kertzman
  said.

"The unchecked ability to add any product deemed by Microsoft to
be of significance to the operating system poses a threat to the
development of any new products or innovation which can
conceivably be bundled," Kertzman said. "This would seemingly
encompass all types of software products that support the IT
  infrastructure of business."

Kertzman also complained of a Microsoft practice that he said
  deprived companies of patent protection.

"In essence, in order to develop applications to run on Windows,
Microsoft requires a company to sign an open tools license
agreement," Kertzman said. "Microsoft's open tools licenses contain
provisions that prevent the tools vendor from suing Microsoft for
infringing the vendor's patent with respect to any of the software
  licensed under that licensing agreement."

Lotus' Papows said he reluctantly came before the Judiciary
Committee since "Lotus has a long and complex relationship with
Microsoft." Lotus products are optimized for Microsoft technology
and will continue to be, he said.

Lotus is also one of the most successful companies that Microsoft
does business with, Papows said. Lotus has a 26 percent share in
the groupware and e-mail market, while Microsoft has only 14
percent, Papows said, citing figures from International Data Corp.

"Having gained a solid foothold in the browser market, Microsoft is
now turning its attention to messaging and groupware, which are key
products in both corporate networks and the Internet," Papows
  said.

"We see Microsoft using some of the same behavior to gain market
dominance in the messaging, groupware, and server software
markets it used so successfully in the desktop suite and Internet
  browser segments," Papows said.

Papows cited one example involving Fox Cable's Brit Hume to
show how Microsoft can force people to use its latest software. He
said that after Hume installed the Encarta Virtual Globe software in
his PC, he was unable to use the browser e-mail commands as he
had always done. Instead, Microsoft Exchange messaging software
  kept coming up, Papows said.

The hearing also got a live demonstration of how Microsoft can use
its software technology to thwart use of competing software. Glaser,
of Real Networks, which has been a pioneer in streaming media,
demonstrated how installing Microsoft's new Windows Media
Player "broke" the widely used Real Player software.

After downloading Media Player and installing it on a system already
equipped with the Real Networks' Real Player, attempts to use Real
Player failed and an error message was displayed.

Microsoft declined to send anyone to testify Thursday, though
company CEO and Chairman Bill Gates has testified at a previous
hearing that Hatch organized on business practices in the software
  industry.

But Microsoft spokesman Greg Shaw, talking to reporters after the
  hearing, provided a rebuttal.

"When you look at the ongoing campaign against Microsoft by Sen.
Hatch and the obvious stacked deck of witnesses at today's hearing,
it's just not clear that any additional testimony from Microsoft would
serve any useful purpose," Shaw said. Citing Microsoft's ongoing
litigation with the U.S. Department of Justice, he also indicated that
the company thought it would be inappropriate to give testimony.

The Justice Department lawsuit, which has been combined with a
lawsuit filed by 20 state attorneys general, focuses on Microsoft's
practices in the browser market. But as Thursday's testimony
showed, Microsoft's practices might affect companies in all aspects
  of the computer industry.

"Microsoft grew up as the David to IBM's Goliath," Glaser said. As
such, it had to be aggressive when it was growing. But, "when you're
  Goliath, is that behavior appropriate?"

WASHINGTON -- At a U.S. Senate Judiciary committee
hearing here Thursday called to investigate Microsoft's business
practices, a small software company demonstrated what some
lawmakers present said was an example of Microsoft's unfair business
  practices.

Robert Glaser, chairman and chief executive officer of Real Networks,
which has been a pioneer in streaming media, demonstrated how
installing Microsoft's new Windows Media Player "broke" the widely
  used Real Player software.

After downloading Media Player and installing it on a system already
equipped with the Real Networks' Real Player, attempts to use Real
Player failed and an error message was displayed. The error message is
fairly brief, and just reads "Can not play back file. The format is not
supported." This fails to give users any information about how to
remedy the situation and make Real Player function again, Glaser said.

Glaser, who spent 10 years at Microsoft and left five years ago as a
vice president for multimedia and consumer systems, said he was
extremely reluctant to testify before the committee Thursday, but that
unless the actions taken by Microsoft are remedied, the computing
world will be "less friendly, less useful to customers, and will slow down
  technical innovation."

Asked by one of the senators on the panel why he had come to testify,
Glaser replied, "I would like nothing more in this case than voluntary
restraint on the part of Microsoft and anybody else in the market with
  that kind of power."

Glaser testified at the behest of Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who
Thursday said he has received numerous complaints from other
companies similar to the one outlined by Glaser. Hatch said that most of
the others are afraid to come before the committee and testify.

The new incompatibility demonstrated between the two applications
"certainly appears to be a rather anticompetitive use of Microsoft's
dominance. From what I've been reading, it may not be isolated," Hatch
said. He also called it "the sort of practice that impedes innovation."

Other senators on the panel agreed with Hatch's assessment, saying that
the U.S. Department of Justice should look into the situation described
by Glaser and perhaps add the allegation to the antitrust case already
  filed against Microsoft.

Glaser said he had been in discussions with Microsoft on and off since
May to try to resolve the problem. Microsoft owns a 10 percent stake
in Real Networks and Windows Media Player is partly based on
technology licensed from the smaller company, Glaser said.

In early June, Glaser said, he had an e-mail exchange with Microsoft
Chairman and CEO Bill Gates in which he said he'd been asked by
Hatch to testify and requested a meeting with Gates to discuss the issue.
Gates declined, saying he wasn't familiar with the business relationship
between the two companies, but advised Glaser to visit the Smithsonian
and National Gallery while he was in Washington.

Glaser said it was with "a great personal sadness" that he had to report
that Microsoft is beginning to inject other factors into the dynamic
between the two companies, using its market power to unfairly impair
  free competition.

While Microsoft declined an invitation to testify before the hearing, its
representative Greg Shaw was present and told a reporter that Glaser's
demonstration was "somewhat of a misleading stunt."

Brad Smith, a member of Microsoft's corporate legal team, said
Microsoft's products work properly with Real Network shipping
products, and that the "broken" product was just a beta version.

Smith also said that Microsoft cooperated fully with the Senate
Judiciary Committee, noting that Gates testified at the hearing in March,
and they felt nothing would be gained by sending a representative to
  Thursday's hearing.

"Clearly, it was an opportunity for a few competitors to get together at
a table and talk about Microsoft," said Smith, who was at the
company's financial analyst conference in Seattle.

A summary of the problem described by Glaser can be found on his
  company's Web site at

IBM and Applied Language Technologies (Altech) on Monday said
they have partnered to combine their speech-activated telephone
software so that banks, insurance, travel, and other companies can
  offer speech-activated services to customers.

The applications will let customers complete various transactions,
such as reserving airline tickets and conducting personal banking,
without touch-tone menus or the assistance of an operator.

Under the terms of the agreement, Altech will adapt its
SpeechWorks software and other tools to work with IBM's
ViaVoice speech recognition software, according to Jerome Beard,
assistant general manager for speech systems at IBM.

Altech's tools are designed to let programmers build speech
recognition applications, and IBM's ViaVoice is the software engine
that lets the computer recognize human voices and converts them into
  text, Beard said.

SpeechWorks and ViaVoice will work on IBM's DirectTalk
platform, which is a server and associated software that runs on an
RS/6000, according to Beard. IBM has plans to make the software
run on additional, undisclosed platforms as well, he said.

The integration of the companies' software will be completed by the
fourth quarter, and systems integrators and companies will then be
able to take the software to develop applications that serve their
customers, Beard said. No additional hardware will be needed by
end-users to use the voice-activated applications, he said.

Initially, the companies' software will support only English speech,
but they plan to move quickly to add additional languages, according
  to Beard.

"We'll be aggressively moving to the differing geographies with these
  same technologies," Beard said.

SANE 0.74 has been released, and includes OS/2 enhancements by Yuri
Dario and Rocco Caputo. I suspect Yuri will have a binary available
for download from his web page soon.

"Jul 27: SANE v0.74 is now available! There is a new backend for
the Kodak DC25 camera and the backends for Artec, Microtek,
Microtek2, Nikon Coolscan, and UMAX have been updated. OS/2 SCSI
support has been improved so scanners can be autodetected and
Epson parallel port scanners should now work under OS/2 as well
  (this is untested, however)."

: Simple Desktop for Java v1.1

On http://www.kiss.uni-lj.si/~k4fe0320 you can find Simple Desktop
for Java v1.1, a Intranet PIM set of desktop utilities like a
planner, phonebook, scratchbook, calculator, scheduler, chat module,
simple database browser and minesweeper.

You need a server computer with OS/2 Warp Server v4.0, TCP/IP and WEB
server on it. On the client side you need Java 1.1 capable browser
like Netscape Navigator 2.02 or incoming Netscape Communicator 4.04.

The following message was posted by David Greenstone
(greensto@ca.ibm.com) at IBM Support to a Visual Age for Java
newsgroup recently:

I am from the Visual Age for Java Service and Support team. I just
happened to be scanning this newsgroup and I came across this
thread. I will post this recent append from the beta coordinator
  onto the vajava.beta newsgroup:

No, we have not planned an OS/2 beta for Version 2, and this is
not at all due to "IBM's abandoning of OS/2"! I will explain the
rationale behind this decision. The development effort is
channeled towards delivering the final product right now, which
everybody is waiting for. Offering a beta is an activity that
requires quite some effort, and given the tight schedule, we are
only able to offer one flavor of the beta, and Windows was
chosen simply because the majority of the customers that we
have are using that platform. We simply cannot offer a beta for
all the platforms and national languages that the VisualAge for
Java final product will be offered on!

However, the final product will be delivered at the same time on
both platforms, and will offer the same level of functionality
on both platforms. With my apologies, I hope that you can see on
a Windows box, for now, what you will get on OS/2 very soon.

    Hope this helps.

    Anca Puiu,
    VisualAge for Java
    Beta Program Coordinator

Minta is an MP3 information, tagging and listing
utility for OS/2. It displays information for MP3
audio files, allows adding and removing of ID3-tags
which provide the ability to store Title, Artist,
Album etc. with the file and are used by many MP3
players and can output all files with their tag info to a
listfile. Easy editing of multiple files, either one by
one or all at once. Minta is freeware.

PU Monitor v2.0 has been released. PU Monitor is a general purpose
system monitoring tool. PU Monitor is highly informative (includes CPU
usage monitor, TCP/IP traffic monitor, Uptime, free RAM, clock, POP3
mailbox checker and Connectivity monitor) and consumes small amount of
desktop space. You can download a copy from www.bmtmicro.com.
