With that the Haiku OS developers then updated all of their Ethernet and WiFi drivers from FreeBSD to align with the FreeBSD 15.0 release.

December also brought many application fixes for Haiku, improved support for Elantech touchpads, mouse driver improvements, work toward resizing support in the BFS file-system driver, and various other improvements.

As for the next beta release of Haiku, they are still working toward the beta six milestone. Before hitting Haiku Beta 6 they still need to fix some regressions but will hopefully begin the release process in the next month or two.

More details on the Haiku improvements for December 2025 via Haiku-OS.org.

FreeBSD, on the other hand, does all of that via the same team. If you've never used Linux, that's a fair assumption. If you've used Linux for several years, the switch to FreeBSD is mostly a matter of understanding a different filesystem structure and package manager. If you can grasp those two things, you're on your way to understanding FreeBSD.

But why would you bother?

As I mentioned, FreeBSD is incredibly stable. I would go so far as to say that it's the most stable operating system available. If you don't know, UNIX was created with a strong emphasis on simplicity and modularity. You have to understand that, at that time (the '60s), operating systems were incredibly challenging. When UNIX came into being, it made it possible for far more people to begin working with an OS that could serve many purposes.

Because FreeBSD is a descendant of the original AT&T UNIX code, you can bet it inherited the stability of its predecessor.

Also: Garuda KDE Dr460nized might be the coolest-looking Linux distro available

As for the comparison between Linux and FreeBSD, consider these points:

Linux package managers vary by distribution, whereas FreeBSD uses pkg and the Ports Collection, separating base system (/usr/bin) from third-party software (/usr/local/).

FreeBSD uses the ZFS file system, whereas Linux offers several options.

FreeBSD includes built-in lightweight virtualization/containerization.

Linux offers more complex routing (multiple tables/policy-based), while FreeBSD uses a simpler, firewall-tagged routing.

FreeBSD includes built-in security auditing, whereas Linux requires separate tools.

Linux is dominant on desktops, mobile (Android), cloud, embedded, and supercomputers, while FreeBSD is heavily invested in servers, NAS, and embedded devices.

Linux offers a much more diverse ecosystem, simple to complex distributions, and excellent gaming support, while FreeBSD is all about being cohesive and stable with easier long-term upgrades.

FreeBSD also features:

Native support for an advanced, fault-tolerant ZFS file system with pooled storage, snapshots, and data integrity.

Lightweight containerization for running isolated services to improve security and resource management beyond the traditional chroot found in Linux.

A built-in, efficient type-2 hypervisor for virtualization.

Highly optimized TCP/IP stack, robust tools, and support for modern protocols, perfect for network-intensive applications.

ACLs, MAC frameworks (TrustedBSD), auditing, and encryption (GELI).

Who is FreeBSD for?

First, FreeBSD is not for those who've only ever used the Windows operating system. The environment includes a dock-style application launcher, a top panel with system indicators, and a workspace system that organizes running applications.

Furthermore, apps are managed through the dock rather than cluttering the desktop with separate icons or minimized windows. And both GNUstep and non-GNUstep applications can run seamlessly, maintaining a consistent interface while supporting a broader range of software.

Future plans include adding more native applications, new tools for browsing and installing software, an updated dock, and deeper system integrations. Currently, XFCE4-WM is used as the window manager, but a custom manager will most likely be developed later.

Getting Gershwin

The team mentions that prebuilt ISOs will be made available soon via GhostBSD for testing and evaluation purposes, with users being able to explore the Gershwin Desktop environment right out of the box.

For now, the desktop can be installed from the unstable package repositories after setting up GhostBSD, allowing early adopters to try the environment and provide feedback.

You can find the source code on GitHub.

Gershwin

Does it look like OS X?

To me, yes it does. If you focus carefully on the term 'OS X' that ceased to exist in 2016 when Apple replaced it with macOS.

In other words, while Gershwin aims to provide a modern desktop environment, it doesn't feel as modern as 2025. At least that's what I feel about it.

I don't see many screenshots of this new DE and didn't have time to test it out myself. Perhaps if I tried it, I might have a different opinion of it.

Your turn. What do you think of Greshwin? Does it provide a modern desktop experience similar to OS X or macOS? Please leave a comment below.

The latest revision to the DragonFlyBSD kernel graphics driver code enables support for some new hardware platforms but remains woefully behind the latest generation dGPUs/iGPUs and what is found in the upstream Linux kernel.

Yesterday's push to the DragonFlyBSD Git tree syncs the DRM driver code against what's found in Linux 4.20.17. Yes, the 4.20 series that debuted at the end of 2018 compared to Linux 6.16 being the very latest upstream. It's also far behind FreeBSD currently using around Linux 6.7 kernel graphics driver code.

This latest sync for DragonFlyBSD does mean some new hardware support compared to what previously was available. The new sync enables AMDGPU driver support for aging AMD Picasso and Rave 2 platforms as well as Vega 20 discrete graphics. The hardware all being years old and several generations behind AMD's latest wares, but at least it's still moving forward bit by bit.

Over on the Intel i915 DRM driver side, DragonFlyBSD now enables support for Intel Ice Lake graphics. There is also a fix for i915 hardware acceleration with this re-base.

The DRM core driver code pulled into DragonFlyBSD is also now providing basic support for DMA-BUF.

More details on this latest DRM sync for DragonFlyBSD via this commit.

GhostBSD: from usability to struggle and renewal

Instead, it offers a high-level view of what happened through the years with GhostBSD, where the project stands today, and where we want to take it next. As you may know, GhostBSD is a user-friendly desktop BSD operating system built with FreeBSD. Its mission is to deliver a simple, stable, and accessible desktop experience for users who want FreeBSD’s power without the complexity of manual setup. I started this journey as a non-technical user. I dreamed of a BSD that anyone could use.
↫ Eric Turgeon at the FreeBSD Foundation’s website

I’m very glad to see this article published on the website of the FreeBSD Foundation. I firmly believe that especially FreeBSD has all the components to become an excellent desktop alternative to desktop Linux distributions, especially now that the Linux world is moving fast with certain features and components not everyone likes. FreeBSD could serve as a valid alternative.

GhostBSD plays an important role in this. It offers not just an easily installable FreeBSD desktop, but also several tools to make managing such an installation easier, like in-house graphical user interfaces for managing Wi-Fi and other networks, backups, updates, installing software, and more. They also recently moved from UFS to ZFS, and intend to develop graphical tools to expose ZFS’s features to users.

GhostBSD can always use more contributors, so if you have the skills, interest, and time, do give it a go.

FreeBSD 14.3 will become the newest stable release this summer while later in 2025 we can look forward to the big FreeBSD 15.0 release.

FreeBSD 14.3 is now in beta form as it works toward the stable release. The FreeBSD 14.3 release process calls for a total of three betas and a release candidate before hopefully declaring FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE in early June. FreeBSD 14.3 would then be supported for the next year through June 2026.

The 14.3 release notes have yet to be started but typically the FreeBSD point releases predominantly are filled up with various bug fixes and various new bits of hardware support.

Meanwhile as the next major feature release is FreeBSD 15.0. The FreeBSD 15.0 release process expects to kick off with alpha releases in early September. After four or so alpha releases are then four weekly betas through October and then around three release candidates in November. The hope is to get FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE out around the start of December. FreeBSD 15 is going to be a very big release.

For now those wanting to help in testing out the first beta of FreeBSD 14.3 can find it via this mailing list announcement.

Some of the hardware driver changes that occurred over the past month include:

- The Intel iaxwifi200 WiFi driver that is derived from IWX from OpenBSD has merged changes for supporting another Intel WiFI 6 adapter.

- The Qualcomm Atheros atheros813x derived from FreeBSD code has also been adapted to fix support for some newer devices.

- A Mediatek driver for MT7601U wireless devices has been ported over from FreeBSD but it's not yet known if it's actually working.

- Autonomous power save mode has been implemented within the NVMe disk driver to save approximately one Watt on some systems.

Plus there are many other low-level improvements that were made the past month throughout the Haiku OS kernel, apps, and rest of the codebase.

See the monthly activity report on Haiku-OS.org to learn more about the development changes from March.
